Questions about Down Hall as a venue

Is Down Hall easy to find?
We are located just 10 minutes from the M11 & two British Rail Stations (Sawbridgeworth and Harlow Mill)

Is Down Hall licensed to carry out civil weddings?
Yes we can cater for ceremonies from 5 guests to 150 guests

What authority does it come under and can they supply names and contact details for the registrar?
Uttlesford District Council who can be contacted on 0845 603 7632

Do I have to make arrangements with the registrar?
Yes, unfortunately we can not do this for you. Please click here for the current Registrars Fees.

How many guests can Down Hall accommodate?
180 guests for wedding breakfast/150 seated for civil ceremony

How many car parking spaces are available?
Over 100

Does Down Hall allow confetti to be thrown?
No, unfortunately not

Does Down Hall allow candles to be lit in the reception room?
Yes we allow tea lights or candelabras

Does Down Hall allow professional firework displays?
Yes (Terms & Conditions may apply)

Does Down Hall have landing permission should we want a helicopter to whisk us away after the evening reception?
Yes there is no landing fee

Questions about the Rooms

Does Down Hall offer the option of a marquee?
Yes (subject to availability)

Are there separate rooms provided for the wedding, reception, meal, evening reception, etc?
Down Hall offers separate rooms for Civil Ceremony & Wedding Breakfast. The evening reception, buffet & bar are all in one room.

Is there a room provided for the use of ‘Bride and Groom’ for the day?

Is there a dressing room that the Bride and Bridesmaids can use prior to the ceremony?

When can we have access to begin setting up the room in terms of decorating it with balloons, flowers, banners, etc?
Down Hall will set up any table decorations. Outside suppliers can have access to the room on the morning of the wedding

If the evening reception is being held in a room that is being used for something else earlier in the day, do you require the DJ/Band to setup their equipment beforehand?
No although this would be your choice

Is there an area that could be used as a crèche if needed?
Yes you may book a conference room to use as a crèche

Is there a quieter area for older guests to get away from the noise of a band/DJ?
The lounge area will be available

If rooms are available for overnight accommodation, how many?
Down Hall has 99 bedrooms that can be booked on a preferential rate

What are the costs for overnight accommodation?
Accommodation ranges from £79 to £140 per room per night

Is breakfast included?
Yes all of our rates are inclusive of bed & breakfast

What is the checkout time the following day?

Do you have a room where you are able to store wedding presents until we are able to collect them and are you insured for any loss or damage to these presents?
No – the bridal party are responsible for all gifts

Questions about Food and Catering

Does Down Hall insist on doing all the catering?
Yes – we cannot accommodate external caterers unless there is a marquee

Can Down Hall supply examples of suggested menus along with prices?
Yes – please see our website for full menus

Does Down Hall include a cake stand and knife if required?
Yes – this is included in all of our packages

Does Down Hall have a preferred order of service?
We work with the Bride & Groom to organise a day to suit their needs

What time does Down Hall offer an alcohol license until?
The residents bar can stay open as long as there are guests using it (at the night manager’s discretion)

What time does Down Hall insist the reception finishes by?
As standard our function bar closes at 12.30am with music to finish by 1am. A late license is possible at a charge of £200.00 per hour

Does Down Hall insist on supplying the wine and champagne?
Yes – Unfortunately we do not allow corkage

We can supply a list of some alternative accommodation

Does Down Hall have any arrangements with local cab companies that offer a reasonably priced and reliable service?
Yes – these can be ordered via the free phone at reception

Is it OK for the photographer/videographer to visit Down Hall beforehand to get an idea of what they can expect on the day?
